Yossef
Romano was born April 15, 1940 in
Bengazi, Libya, one of eleven children. He made
aliyah to Israel with his family
in 1946. Yossef
worked as an
interior decorator. He and wife Ilana
were the parents of
three daughters. Yossef was
Israel's weightlifting
champion in the middleweight
division for 10 years. He
represented his team
Hapoel Tel Aviv
and the national team in
national and international competitions. During the
last years of his life, Yossef coached and ran the
weightlifting team of
Hapoel Tel Aviv.
At the 1972 Olympics, muscle damage in one leg
prevented Yossef from finishing the competition.
He was due to return home to his family in Israel on
September 6 for an operation. The 1972 Olympic
Games was the peak of Yossef Romano's sports
