Amitzur Shapira was born July 9, 1932
in Tel Aviv, Israel. He was married and the father of
four children at the time of the 1972 Munich Olympics. Amitzur
Shapira was regarded as Israel's top track and field coach at
Israel's
National Center for Physical Education and Sport, the
Wingate
SPORTS Institute,
in Netanya, Israel. He discovered the running
talent of Esther Shahamurov when she was 14
years old, and developed her talent in preparation for the
Olympics. On September 4, 1972, Esther qualified for the 100 meter
hurdles semifinals, and set a new Israeli record. That evening,
part of the Israeli Olympic team went to Munich to see the play,
"Fiddler on the Roof." After the play
ended, the group posed for photographs and retired for the night
at the Olympic Village.
